During summer vacation season I take care of a lot of different cats. What I have noticed is that many cat owners do not seem to realize that their cats need human contact and stimulation as much as they need food, water and a clean litter box. Even if your cat is finicky about the people he or she wants to play with or have pet them, they are still used to human contact. They should have toys, scratch boards, cat furniture to keep them occupied and challenged but they also need a human being around for a little time each day.. Even cats who hide under the bed or in the closet can derive comfort from knowing that a human being is around.
When I encounter a frightened cat who does not want to engage with me, I simply sit on the floor and talk to them for awhile. Some will come out to see me, others will not, but I know it makes them feel safer and less stressed when they know a human has been there.
