In her blog today, "Speaking for Spot", Dr Nancy Kay addresses the very emotionally charged subject of euthanasia versus hospice or palliative care. It is an extremely difficult decision for pet parents to make as their "furry kid" approaches the end of his or her life. For most of us, euthanasia has seemed to be the only answer to end our pet's pain and suffering but Dr. Kay points out that several people are choosing to go the hospice route; keeping their pets comfortable and pain-free but alive until nature takes its course. The decision to proceed with hospice care should be very carefully thought out as it is a very emotionally and physically demanding choice. Dr. Kay advises that if you are considering this option you choose a veterinarian who is in agreement with supporting your wishes and who will come to your home as needed and assist in pain management as required.
