Since it had been a few years ago that I completed my Pet First Aid certification, I decided to take the course again to refresh my knowledge and skills. I attended the course presented at the San Diego Humane Society last Saturday. The course was designed by the American Red Cross and was full of excellent information on everything from evacuating pets in a disaster to treating snakebites, shocks, fractures, heatstroke, etc. We also learned how to recognize an emergency and how and when to do rescue breathing and CPR. The time went very quickly and when it was finished, I felt very confident in my ability to deal with an unforeseen pet emergency.
I highly recommend a Pet First Aid course for every pet parent. The San Diego Humane Society offers them once a month alternating between the San Diego and Oceanside locations. The course is very reasonably priced and includes a DVD and manual so that you can refresh your knowledge on your own. You should also pick up a Pet First Aid Kit that you can keep at home or in your car. You never know when you may be called upon to save a pet's life...your own pet or someone else's.
