Yes it is that time of year again. Foxtail season. In San Diego the foxtail is out in full force from May until December. These nasty little weeds are bad news for dogs and outside cats and can cause lots of problems.
The head of the seed is barbed and as a result it sticks to eyes, ears, feet and genital areas. It can also migrate and be inhaled.
The body is unable to break down the seeds and they can often cause infection as well as a great deal of pain and discomfort. Make sure you keep your pets away from these nasty things while on your walks and in your yards.
If your dog or cat shows any of these symptoms they may have already come into contact with a foxtail:
Red, squinty eyes, shaking or scratching the ears, excessive paw licking or limping or repeated, quick-onset sneezing. Take them to the veterinarian as soon as possible to insure they do not get infected.
