I came across an interesting article today written by Motley Fool in the Nasdaq bulletin regarding the growth of pet ownership in America. I thought I would share some of the statistics with you.
In a survey completed by the American Pet Products Association for 2013-2014, they discovered that 68% of Americans have pets in their home. 56.7 million of us have dogs while 45.3% have cats.
In an online survey where pet owners were asked several questions about life with their pets, 91% said they consider their pet as part of the family. 2/3 of respondents said their pet sleeps in bed with them. 61% buy their pet a present at holiday time. And 25% confessed to home cooking meals for their pets.
In 2014, the APPA estimates we will spend a total of $58.5 billion on our "furry kids". That includes veterinary care, food, toys, daycare, boarding, pet sitting, clothing etc.
As a professional pet sitter for the past 6 years, I have noticed a great increase in pet adoptions from shelters and rescue groups. This is a wonderful development as so many fantastic pets are waiting in humane societies and foster homes for their forever families.
Keep up the good work America!
