As you all know by now, I am a huge animal advocate and a proponent of adopt, adopt, adopt. Even if you want a purebred dog; even if you want a puppy; please go to the shelters and rescue groups first. It is a fact that 25% of the dogs that end up in shelters are purebreds. However, if you still insist on getting your puppy from a breeder, then for goodness sake go to a reputable one. How will you know? Look for the following: - The breeder will supply references
- They will breed only one breed of dogs, ie Yorkies

Today I want to share a profound quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson.
"For every animal that dies in a shelter, there is someone, somewhere, responsible for its death."
Whether it is the woman who chose tobuya puppy from a pet store instead of adopting one from the shelter; or the man who relinquished his dog because he barked too much; or the person who didn't get his pit bull spayed and instead ended up with a litter of pups he couldn't give away; each of these people is responsible for the 4-5 million animals euthanized in shelters in the U. |

In her daily newsletter today, Dr. Karen Becker describes the new Humane Education programs being introduced in European schools. There are approximately 200 million pets owned by European families and the European Pet Food Industry Federation thought it would be a good idea to start teaching children about responsibly caring for pets The program consists of three areas of focus. "Fascinating Cats", "Fascinating Dogs", and "Dogs and Young Children". The latter one teaches children how to be safe around dogs. |

For many people who work long hours, leaving their dog at home alone during the day is a difficult thing to do. And certainly, the dog should have a break by either you coming home and spending time with him, or by hiring a dog walker to do that for you. However, many dog owners feel that is not enough. They believe their solo dog should have a companion. After all, he gets along with other dogs at the dog park and meets other dogs very politely when on leash. Having a canine brother or sister would give him someone to play with all day. |

Have you ever thought about medicating your pet with something from your medicine cabinet in the hopes of avoiding a vet visit? DON'T DO IT!!! Many of the over-the-counter medications that are safe for humans are toxic to dogs and cats and even a small amount can be life-threatening. Things like aspiring, ibuprofin, etc. are all very dangerous for our pets. Also, make sure those medications are locked away safely in a place where the animals can't reach them. A client of mine left a package of Imodium by her bedside table and when she came home from work, the package was empty and obviously had been chewed by one of her dogs. |
