Do Rats Laugh ?

Because most people have such a negative image of rats, when I came across an article on the website of Healthy Pets written by Dr. Becker, I thought it would be great to share it with you and hopefully, change that negative image. The article was about rats and whether or not they laugh.
According to a famous neuroscientist, they do.
Jack Panksepp, a researcher at Washington State University, has been studying rats for years. Recently, through the use of highly sensitive equipment that can detect high frequency rat sounds, he picked up lots of chirping noises. These noises were most perceptible when the rats were playing with one another. The same chirping sounds were produced when the dopamine circuits in the rats' brains were stimulated. Dr. Panksepp thought these chirping sounds could very well be laughter and decided to tickle the rats and see what happened. The same chirping sounds were produced in dramatic fashion when the rats were tickled. As a result, Dr. Panksepp concluded that not only do rats laugh but the tickling interaction created affection for the human hands that made them giggle. How cute is that!

Canine First Aid Essentials

I just received from the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University a list of the essential first aid supplies you should have on hand as a dog owner. I am sharing that list with you here:
1) Gauze, sterile pads, and vet wrap, a self-clinging elastic wrap - all can be used to wrap a wound.
2) Scissors.
3) Styptic pencil or powder to stop a nail from bleeding.
4) Tweezers or forceps to remove splinters, ticks, etc.
5) Triple antibiotic treatment to inhibit bacterial growth and infection.

International Homeless Animal Day

The third Saturday of August is International Homeless Animal Day. Groups around the world will come together to raise awareness about pet-overpopulation and declare "We will not tolerate the senseless killing of dogs and cats, puppies and kittens simply because there are not enough good homes for them."
With events in 9 countries and 24 states in the U.S., people are gearing up to take a stand. There will be candlelight vigils, adoption events, microchip clinics, rallies, dog walks, ceremonies and more.

Pet Relinquishment

In the most recent issue of "Your Dog" published by the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, I read an article entitled,"Why pets end up in shelters". Although the information didn't surprise me, as I have volunteered at the San Diego Humane Society for several years, it did upset me.
Although many people may believe the top reason for pet relinquishment was the pet's bad behavior,or perhaps costly illness,  they didn't even rank in the top 10.

Dog Days Of Summer

Just a reminder that the Dog Days of Summer Canine Festival and Contests will be held this Saturday from 10:00 am to 3:00 p.m. The address is 124 Aberdeen Drive in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. This is always extremely well-attended and loads of fun for everyone. Plan to come and bring the kids, the two legged ones as well as the four legged ones; you won't be sorry.

Another reminder that these very hot days are not fun for our dogs. Please be considerate when walking them. Keep them out of the midday sun if possible.
