As a Certified Humane Education Specialist and a member of the Association of Professional Humane Educators, I receive a newsletter filled with wonderful information that teaches children how to be kind to animals. This month's issue highlights two wonderful books I highly recommend you get for your youngsters. One is called "Rescue Pup", written by Brenda Fiorini. "It teaches about the dangers a stray animal faces, rescue efforts, compassion and kindness, adoption from shelters, and pet ownership responsibilities. The concepts are introduced very simply for young children."
The second book is called "Koko Cat, Inside and Out". It is written by Lynda Graham-Barber. This is a wonderful book that outlines the dangers that face outdoor cats. "Koko is an indoor cat who enjoys his life until he runs outside when the door is opened". The book tells of Koko's frightening experiences as an outdoor cat but thankfully has a happy outcome. This book would work well for children in elementary school.
It is never too soon to teach our children about kindness and respect for nature and animals. These books are a great start.
