Pets for Vets is a wonderful program that matches returning veterans with shelter dogs.- a perfect pairing. Many of our soldiers return from deployment with broken bones, broken spirits and broken hearts. It is estimated that as many as 25% of returning vets suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Their physical and emotional injuries often make it very difficult for them to transition back into civilian life. Studies have shown that companion animals, primarily dogs, can greatly improve the health of traumatized veterans.
By the same token, many of the dogs that end up in U.S. shelters have also had traumatic experiences,- abuse, abandonment, life as a stray, and the love and kindness of a human companion can most certainly help them heal.
SO the perfect solution, put them together, and that is what Pets For Vets does. Professional trainers rehabilitate the dogs and teach them basic behaviors as well as any special skills they may need to work with physically and mentally compromised veterans. This is a real win/win situation. To find out more or to donate to this wonderful cause please visit: www.pets-for-vets.com.
