February 26, 2013 is World Spay Day, an annual campaign of the HSUS and Humane Society International that shines a spotlight on spay/neuter—a proven way to save the lives of companion animals, feral cats, and street dogs who might otherwise be put down in a shelter or killed on the street.
The problem is simply pet-overpopulation. There is just not enough room in shelters, rescues and humane societies for all the cats and dogs that need forever homes, so between 4-5 million of perfectly healthy adoptable animals are killed every year here in this country. If we continue to let our pets breed indiscriminately, the problem will only get worse.
If you have a companion animal that has not yet been spayed or neutered , please consider doing it soon. If cost is a factor there are several clinics, including the San Diego Humane Society, that offer low cost spay neutering for pets.
Remember, if you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem.
